These sessions will run the duration of the RCYH Youth Hockey Season. Late Oct. through early March.
River City Youth Hockey's Learn to Skate program is built around the USA Hockey Learn to Skate curriculum, helping new skaters develop the confidence, balance, and skating fundamentals needed to enjoy the ice—and providing a strong foundation for those who may choose to play hockey in the future.
Throughout the season, participants will progressively develop skills such as:
- Balance, coordination, and athletic movement on the ice
- Falling safely and recovering to a standing position
- Proper hockey skating stance and knee bend
- Forward skating and stride development
- Gliding, edges, and turning
- Stopping and changing direction
- Beginning backward skating and other age-appropriate skating skills
While no sticks or pucks are used during Learn to Skate sessions, many of the skills taught are the same foundational skating techniques used in hockey. Whether your child simply wants to become a confident skater or is considering youth hockey in the future, this program provides the skills and confidence to take that next step.
A Flexible Way to Get Started
Our Learn to Skate program is designed to let families experience the ice without committing to a full hockey season. If your child decides they're ready for hockey, your $50 Learn to Skate registration fee will be credited toward RCYH registration through December 14, making it easy to continue building skills and confidence on the ice.
